Ground flaxseed is an excellent protein supplement for use in dairy rations and can be used as the sole protein supplement in the concentrate. It is highly palatable and does not affect dry matter intake. The protein quality for dairy is similar to canola meal and ranks higher than other commonly used protein sources such as soybean meal, brewers dried grains and feather meal. Expeller-processed meal contains higher levels of fat and, therefore, energy but has a higher rate of ruminal crude protein degradation. Solvent-extracted ground flaxseed is often the preferred source for dairy rations, as it has a higher level of ruminal by-pass protein due to protein denaturation during desolventization, but it still retains a high level of total tract protein digestibility and therefore supports high levels of milk production, milk fat and protein content.
