Whole flaxseed

Flaxseed is the whole seed version of flax and it comes in two colours: grown or golden. Golden and brown flaxseed are nutritionally the same and can be used interchangeably. Whole flaxseed is high in fibre.

Ground flaxseed (or flaxmeal)

Ground flaxseed has a higher content of omega-3 fats, phytoestrogens and fibre than whole flaxseed, because the process of grinding the seed releases more nutritional components.

You can grind your own flaxseed at home using a spice mill, coffee grinder, food processor or blender.

Flaxseed oil

Flaxseed oil is made from ground and pressed flaxseeds.

It can be used as a cooking oil but because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is also used to treat a variety of other health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, anxiety, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and more.
